Description

Qualitative Detection Of Bovine Coronavirus Antigens

Test Applicable to: Calf
Sample: Faeces

The FASTest BCV Strip is based on a rapid immunochromatographic test principle. The test membrane contains two unique monoclonal antibodies. One of these monoclonal antibodies is bound to colloidal gold particles, the second is immobilised in the test zone of the strip. If the stool sample extract contains bovine coronavirus antigens, these will form an antigen-antibody complex with the gold particles. As this complex migrates along the Test zone of the membrane to the immobilised capture antibody, a pink-purple line is formed indicating a positive test result.

Fast Aetiological Diagnostics

Coronavirus infections show fluid and mucous diarrhoea, mostly over a short period of time. Stress situations and secondary viral or bacterial infections concurrent to bovine coronavirus infections can prove fatal to the animal.

Bovine Coronavirus is often associated with Rotavirus, Cryptosporidium and enterotoxigenic E.coli. Also see our FASTest D4T Bovine Strip which is a unique device allowing a faeces sample to be tested using 4 rapid immunochromatographic test strips for the detection of Bovine Coronavirus, Rotavirus, Cryptosporidium and E.coli-99 – all at the same time.

Why Test?

Why is it important to test for Bovine Coronavirus?

Bovine Coronavirus infection is one of the most frequent causes of gastroenteritis in calves and related species. Coronavirus infections in calves are one of the most common causes of neonatal diarrhoea. The virus breeds in the small intestine and is excreted with the animal’s faeces. After excretion, the bovine coronavirus remains for a long time in the environment.

Early Diagnosis and Associations

Early diagnosis is vital for successful treatment because the medication has to begin within 24 hours of the onset of diarrhoea. To detect enteropathogens in calves requires time, experience and specialists laboratory equipment. The practising veterinarian, however, requires rapid, reproducible, sensitive and simple diagnostic tests for quick decisions on therapeutic and prophylactic strategies. Therefore, rapid immunochromatographic assays have been developed to detect different enteropathogens in calf faeces within a few minutes in the field.

Symptoms

What are the symptoms of Bovine Coronavirus?

Bovine Coronavirus infections show fluid and mucous diarrhoea, mostly over a short period of time.

In adult animals, coronavirus infections have a sub-clinical course. A passive transfer of coronavirus maternal antibodies has been demonstrated. Stressful situations and a secondary viral or bacterial infection concurrent to bovine coronavirus infections can prove fatal to the animal.
