Description

Qualitative Detection Of Antibodies Against Canine Parvovirus

Test applicable to: Dog
Sample: Plasma or Serum

FASTest CPV Ab is a rapid immunochromatographic ‘lateral flow’ test for the detection of Canine Parvovirus IgG antibodies in plasma or serum. The disease is characterised by severe enteritis and lymphopenia with high mortality, especially in non-immune dogs. Antibody titers to CPV are important to prediction of canine health and preparing of a vaccination program.

FASTest CPV Ab is the only in-clinic device that can easily and quickly estimate the level of CPV antibody present in canine serum.

Unvaccinated Clinical Cases

Another use for measuring CPV antibodies is in unvaccinated clinical cases that test negative for CPV antigen in faeces. False negative faecal antigen results can occur when clinical signs have persisted more than 48 hours when CPV antibodies have risen to very high levels. CPV antibody measurement in these cases can help to indirectly implicate CPV as a cause.

Why Test?

Why is it important to test for Canine Parvovirus antibodies?

Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is one of the most common and deadly causes of viral gastroenteritis in dogs throughout the world. Vaccination is readily available and has dramatically reduced the prevalence of the disease in the UK. However, the disease still occurs mainly due to the virus’s extreme resistance and ability to remain viable in the environment for up to one year.

Maternal Antibodies

Another reason is maternal antibody that can persist in puppies up to 12 weeks of age. This antibody can neutralise the vaccine virus if vaccination is not timed correctly. Therefore it is useful to be able to measure CPV antibody levels prior to vaccination.

Symptoms

What are the Symptoms of Canine Parvovirus?

The main causes of Canine Parvovirus are viral gastroenteritis in dogs. This can be characterised in several forms causing gastrointestinal, neurologic, respiratory and cutaneous signs.

The most common clinical signs are sickness and diarrhoea followed by possible dehydration and tiredness in the animal.
