Cryptosporidium parvum and Rotavirus

Diarrhoea can lead to severe courses of disease even death for all species. Among the diverse diarrhoea pathogens in pocket pets, pets and farm animals, especially Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) and Rotavirus (RV) are a great challenge for the veterinarian due to their common appearance and their zoonotic potential.

Especially in the cattle population, Rotavirus is widely spread (seroprevalence up to 100%). Recent studies in Germany with small animals have shown prevalence in dogs and cats of 7% and 8%, respectively.

Cryptosporidia form two types of infectious oocysts: 20% are thin-walled and stay in the host, where they cause reinfection through autoinfection. The remaining 80% are thick-walled and are excreted intermittently, i.e., not with every defecation, in dormancy stages. These are very resistant and can remain infectious for months. They can infect other animals as well as humans via drinking water. Clinical symptoms can vary depending on age and immune status of the animal. Neonates and young animals are predominantly affected. Caused by the high infectiveness, often a population problem arises. Double infections are not uncommon. Special attention should be paid in the fact that Cryptosporidia as well as Rotavirus play important roles independent of the diarrhoea problem (asymptomatic shedders).

Therefore, FASTest® CRYPTO-ROTA Strip enables the veterinarian to detect both pathogens early, specifically and on-site in pocket pets, pets and farm animals and therefore to introduce specific therapy, hygiene and prevention measures immediately.

Why Test?

Why it is important to test for Cryptosporidium parvum and Rotavirus

Cryptosporidiosis (Cryptosporidium parvum) is an important protozoan disease, causing diarrhoea in many domestic animals and synanthropic species e.g., hedgehogs and reptiles, as well as humans (zoonosis).
Cryptosporidium parvum most commonly causes problems in calves and, together with Rotavirus and Coronavirus, is responsible for neonatal diarrhoea which can lead to economic losses.
Cryptosporidium parvum has also been reported in dogs (particularly young dogs less than 6 months old), cats, hedgehogs and exotics – especially those which are under stress or immuno-compromised.

Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea (gastroenteritis) in young humans, domestic animals and birds. It is one of the primary causes of neonatal diarrhoea in calves (along with Coronavirus, Cryptosporidium spp, E.coli spp and Salmonella spp). Affected animals develop severe diarrhoea, leading to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and acidosis. FASTest ROTA Strip allows the veterinarian on clinical grounds to reach a specific diagnosis. The rapid identification saves time which can be used to suggest management strategies that will prevent further outbreaks of the disease optimising farm animal’s health and farm productivity.
