FASTest Koi HV

For The Detection of Koi Herpesvirus

Test applicable to: Koi Carp and Common Carp
Sample: Gill tissue

FASTest KOI HV is a simple immunochromatographic “lateral flow” test for the rapid qualitative detection of KHV antigens in swab samples taken from gill tissue of Koi carp and common carp.

Mode Of Transmission

The mode of transmission of Koi herpesvirus is horizontal which may be direct or vectorial, with water being the major abiotic vector. However vertical transmission cannot be ruled out. Koi herpesvirus remains active in the water for at least 4 hours especially in water temperatures of 16-25°C. Koi Herpesvirus is shed by faeces, gills, urine and skin mucus. Infection is mainly via the skin. After entry, the virus spreads systemically from the portal of entry to superficial and internal organs.

High Levels Of The Virus

High levels of the virus DNA have been found in the following areas:

  • Skin
  • Gills
  • Spleen
  • Liver
  • Gut Tissues

Why is it important to test for KOI Herpesvirus?

Clinical signs of KHB are relatively non-specific.

The virus causes a highly contagious and acute viraemia in common carp (Cyprinus carpio), Koi carp (C.c.koi) and its different variants.

This disease can result in mortality rates of 70-100%. A rapid identification of KHV in diseased or dead fish is vital to initiate elimination/disinfection and effective quarantine measures.

Due to its potential to cause considerable economic damage, KHN is also listed as a notifiable disease by the Diseases of Fish (England and Wales) Order 2007 and the World Organisation for Animal Health OIE (

What are the symptoms of KOI Herpesvirus?

Clinical signs of KOI herpesvirus are difficult to distinguish from other fish related illnesses and diseases and generally include evident hypersecretion of mucus in the early stage of the infection.

Clinical signs can include the following:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Sunken eyes
  • Discolouration of skin and gills as well as skin lesions
  • Necrotic gills
